Papers, 1883?-1915.

This collection consists of both personal and business papers, and scrapbooks. The personal papers include miscellaneous correspondence, and correspondence regarding genealogical information on the Roe family that Roe apparently requested from members of the family in several states, as well as copies of wills of several ancestors. The business papers include correspondence, from the year 1898, to Roe as chairman of the Committee on Education in the Massachusetts Legislature. There is also a copy of "Proposed Legislation Concerning School Attendance and Truancy. House--209." The collection also contains nine of Roe's addresses whose topics include: "Ten Years of School Legislation in Massachusetts," "Massachusetts in the Rebellion," temperance, and memorials of several Massachusetts citizens. The scrapbooks, which cover the years 1878 to 1899, contains newsclippings on a variety of genealogical and antiquarian items. Each volume includes an index.

Alfred Seelye Roe (1844-1917), of Worcester, Mass., had been a Union soldier in the Civil War and was active in the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) of Worcester. He was a teacher and the principal of Worcester High School from 1880 to 1890 and served as a state legislator from 1891 to 1898.
